Tsvetanov: Bulgaria External Border is among Most Reliable in EU

19.06.2012

Bulgaria's membership in Schengen is a responsibility and challenge for the government, Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov said during a business luncheon with members of the American Chamber of Commerce on June 18. He elaborated on the key steps to implement all the criteria laid down in the requirements for accession of Bulgaria and expressed a strong view that as a result of all efforts Bulgarian external border is one of the most reliable in the EU.

“The highest standards have been applied in technical provisions of the border - an evaluation, expressed in the conclusions of the inspection committees”, Tsvetanov said. As a good example of partnership the interior minister mentioned the one with Agency "Frontex" where the Bulgarian police forces are actively participating.

Proof of this is that right now - during the European Football Championship, five Bulgarian border policemen with three specialized vehicles are posted on the Polish - Ukrainian border. Tsvetanov was adamant that when Bulgaria joins the Schengen family there will be no reduction of staff number on the Bulgarian-Greek border. In this regard about 30 thousand police and customs officers passed specialized training to improve their qualifications.
