Bank Drain Ghosts Haunt Bulgaria Again

Foreign banks are pulling funds from their subsidiaries in Bulgaria as lending growth in the country stalls, shows preliminary data of BIS, the central bank of central banks, as cited by local media. The total exposure of foreign banks to Bulgaria totaled USD 2.3 B during the third qurater of last year and about half of it - USD 1 B - was withdrawn by Greek banks, Sega daily reported, citing preliminary data from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) wrote.

Bulgaria’s Government nominates five further ambassadors

The process of Bulgaria reshaping its diplomatic corps abroad took a further step forward on February 1 2012 when the Cabinet approved a further five nominations for ambassadors, to Spain, Russia, Syria, Morocco and Pakistan. The nominations will be sent to President Rossen Plevneliev for approval. Boiko Kotsev has been nominated to head the Bulgarian embassy in Moscow, while three career diplomats have been named to head Bulgaria’s missions in Islamabad, Damascus and Madrid, The Sofia Echo wrote.

Bulgaria Formally Closes Down Tobacco Agency

The Tobacco Fund, Bulgaria's state unit in charge of subsidies for tobacco growers, was officially disbanded at a cabinet sitting Wednesday. The entity had been rendered obsolete by EU requirements, which mandated that tobacco funds be integrated in the state's overall policy for subsidizing agriculture. In line with that, starting 2011 tobacco money passed under the authority of the Agriculture Fund entity at Bulgaria's Ministry of Agriculture and Foods, Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) wrote.

Bulgaria to Pay Debt on Burgas-Alexandroupolis in 2012

Bulgaria plans to pay its debt on the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline in 2012, said Plamen Grozdanov, Bulgarian Ambassador to Moscow. In an interview for Russian news agency Interfax, he explained that the Bulgarian government had agreed to allocate BGN 12.8 M for the payment of its financial obligations as a participant in the oil pipeline project. Grozdanov specified that the sum had been accrued since 2009, Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) wrote.

German Chancellor Merkel in China on eurozone talks

Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, has arrived in Beijing for a two-day visit expected to focus on the eurzone crisis, Iran and Syria. Accompanied by a 20 strong trade delegation, she is scheduled to meet President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao in the capital. On Friday, she will visit Guangdong province with Mr Wen and executives from various industries, BBC wrote.

Eastern Europe - What Lies Ahead in 2012

According to Colliers’ report, which analyses real estate trends in 13 Eastern European property markets, positive economic growth is forecast across the region for the year ahead. Only Greece is set to witness a recession as the country gets to grips with austerity planning and the fall-out of Europe’s sovereign debt crisis. In all other markets economic prospects remain, although it is noticeable that forecasts have been gradually and regularly pared back over the last three months, as economic sentiment worsened at the end of 2011.

Investor.BG AD reported 19% sales growth in the fourth quarter of 2011

On Jan. 13 Investor.BG AD reported 19% sales growth in the fourth quarter of 2011 on annual basis to BGN 1.32 million, the company announced through Bulletin Investor.bg. For the entire 2011 the sales amount to BGN 3.97 million reporting an annual increase of 14%. For the last 12 months Investor.BG’s shares become cheaper with 7% to BGN 11.49 per share and BGN 16.5 million market capitalization.
